If the name Sylvania sounds familiar its because they are most well known for producing fantastic light bulbs. Continuing their tradition of all things headlight related, they recently joined the market of headlight restoration kit and released their own. Like most other kits out there, the Sylvania Headlight Restoration Kit will contain almost everything you need (including masking tape). Although the kit is around the same price as others at roughly $20 on Amazon, what separates this kit from the others is that kit contains a UV clear coat blocker that prevents fade.
The vehicle on display is a 2002 Toyota Sequoia which after a decade of driving will show signs of wear and tear, especially on the headlights.
The first step is to take the surface activator and spray it over the headlights. This will remove any discoloration and soften the UV coating.
Your first sanding of the headlight will require usage of the 400 grit sandpaper. Apply water on the sandpaper and headlight and start to sand in a circular motion for about 5 minutes. Be sure to constantly be applying water.
You will repeat the process afterwards with the 1000 grit sandpaper. Use plenty of water of course. You can see it is slightly improving due to the finer material.
The last phase of the sanding process will require the even finer 2000 grit sandpaper. You will start to notice significant differences in terms of clarity. Again use plenty of water. Each phase shouldn’t have taken more than 5 minutes if done correctly.
Using the supplied tan clarifying compound, polish the headlight lens using a smooth circular motion. This should make some improvements to the lens but we’re still not done yet.
After the polish, use the surface activator one more time to clean the headlight. Once that is done, wipe it clean and dry using a towel to begin the last step of clear coat.
Using the UV block clear coat and supplied cloth, wipe the headlight from left to right, starting from the top while working your way day, over lapping the edges of each wipe. Keep the cloth moist on each pass and repeat until completed. The final outcome should look like a brand new headlight with clear visibility. It will also take up to 3 hours for the clear coat to fully cure so its recommended you don’t drive immediately.
Since Sylvania is a lightbulb company we expected nothing short of great results and that is what we saw. The Sylvania Headlight Restoration Kit price is comparable to other kits but we do like how they supplied a UV Clear Coat where as other kits do not. We expect to see long term positive results. It took us just under an hour while taking our careful time. The results speak for themselves but we’re impressed!
